In a recent judicial proceeding, a textile company faced a significant fine of £60,000 due to a grave workplace injury that resulted in a worker sustaining serious injuries. The incident unfolded at a factory near Chorley, operated by PinCroft Dyeing and Printing Co. Limited, highlighting critical lapses in safety protocols.
The unfortunate event occurred on 20 June 2022, when an employee from Blackrod, Greater Manchester, suffered a severe workplace injury. While operating a large fabric spooling machine, the worker’s arm was disastrously dragged into the machinery due to a brake malfunction. In a perilous attempt to manually slow the machine, his sleeve was caught by an exposed grooved spindle, causing his right arm to be drawn into the mechanism. This accident at work resulted in the breaking of both major bones in the forearm along with serious tissue damage, emphasizing the dire consequences of safety oversight.
Investigations led by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that Pin Croft Dyeing and Printing Co. Limited had previously recognized the risk posed by the moving spindle but failed to implement necessary safeguards. This negligence led to the worker’s prolonged hospitalization and a six-month work hiatus, significantly impacting his livelihood.
During the hearing at Preston Magistrates Court, it was disclosed that the company had overlooked crucial safety measures, violating section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Alongside the hefty fine, the court mandated the payment of £2,147 in costs, underscoring the legal and financial repercussions of failing to maintain a safe working environment.
HSE inspector David Bellis remarked on the avoidability of the accident, stressing the importance of adhering to basic safety measures. He emphasized the necessity for employers to thoroughly assess risks and implement effective control measures to prevent similar incidents. This case serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for stringent workplace safety standards and practices in the workplace.
The incident not only sheds light on the importance of safety measures but also prompts a broader discussion on workplace health and safety. Employers are urged to prioritize the well-being of their workforce by rigorously assessing potential hazards and adopting comprehensive safety protocols. As this case demonstrates, the costs of neglecting safety standards extend far beyond financial penalties, affecting lives and livelihoods.
The Workers Union Says…
“The safety of workers must be the paramount concern for all employers. This incident is a sobering reminder of what can happen when safety measures are not treated with the seriousness they deserve. It is imperative that all employers, regardless of industry, take proactive steps to ensure their work environments are safe for every employee. This involves regular risk assessments, the implementation of effective safety measures with focus, and a commitment to fostering a culture of safety first.”
