In a refreshing twist to the typical workweek, Kellanova, the powerhouse behind beloved brands like Kellogg’s and Pringles, has unveiled a “Summer Hours” working conditions and employee wellbeing scheme allowing employees to wrap up their workweek at noon on Fridays. This innovative program is set to run through September and is designed to offer workers a much-needed breather, enhancing overall productivity and job satisfaction.
The initiative covers over 500 staff members at Kellanova’s MediaCity office in Salford, along with 60 field sales team members. To participate, employees must ensure they’ve completed their scheduled hours for the week, paving the way for an extended weekend. This flexible arrangement comes as part of Kellanova’s commitment to fostering a supportive work environment that acknowledges the hard work of its team.
Research conducted by Kellanova indicates a significant trend: two-thirds of employees are likely to increase their work effort during Monday to Thursday if they can enjoy extended weekends. This finding aligns with broader shifts in workplace culture, where flexibility and work-life balance are becoming pivotal to employee retention and satisfaction.
Lejla Damon, a shopper marketing manager at Kellanova, shares her personal gains from the program, “The summer hours scheme has been a game changer for me. It has given me the opportunity to pursue my passion for yoga, allowing me to conduct classes and even undertake additional training.” Damon’s story is a testament to how such policies can assist employees in balancing their careers with personal development and hobbies.
Chris Silcock, Managing Director of Kellanova, expressed his enthusiasm for the continuation of this long-standing tradition, “We’ve seen firsthand how a half day off can significantly uplift our team’s spirit and productivity. It’s our way of saying ‘thank you’ for their dedication and hard work.”
This initiative by Kellanova comes in the wake of the largest four-day workweek trial in the UK, where the majority of participating companies have adopted the model permanently due to its success. According to a study released in February this year, 89% of the organizations involved in the 2022 pilot have continued with the policy, and over half have made these changes permanent, underscoring a major shift towards more flexible work arrangements.
As businesses continue to innovate in how they manage work schedules, Kellanova’s summer hours program stands out as a prime example of how companies can significantly enhance their employees’ quality of work life balance while still maintaining high productivity levels.
The Workers Union Says…
“This brilliant initiative not only champions the well-being of workers but also sets a precedent for other companies to consider similar approaches to improve their work environments, and is something we have been requesting for workers for a long time.”
