In a recent breakthrough for social care workers, a pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) tool called Magic Notes has dramatically reduced the time social workers spend on administrative tasks. During a pilot scheme at Swindon Borough Council, the AI software slashed admin work by over 60%, allowing social workers to dedicate more time to meaningful interactions with those they support.
The trial involved 19 social workers and covered 184 meetings between April and June. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with the average time spent on assessments dropping from 90 minutes to just 35 minutes. Furthermore, the time required to write up these assessments fell from four hours to just 90 minutes.
Streamlining Social Care Through AI
Magic Notes, developed by UK-based organisation Beam, records conversations and generates assessments, significantly easing the administrative burden on social workers. The tool’s ability to simplify paperwork and documentation has made a noticeable difference in the daily routines of those involved in the trial.
According to Swindon Borough Council, the AI tool enabled social workers to focus on engaging in “meaningful, person-centred conversations with those they support,” rather than spending excessive time on documentation. The reduction in admin time not only enhanced the efficiency of the service but also fostered a stronger connection between social workers and the individuals they care for.
A More Inclusive Workplace
The introduction of Magic Notes has also been praised for its inclusivity. Social workers with obstacles such as visual impairments, English as a second language, or dyslexia reported that the AI tool helped create a more inclusive and supportive workplace. It allowed them to perform their roles with greater ease and confidence, contributing to an overall positive shift in workplace culture.
Councillor Ray Ballman, Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, described Magic Notes as a “game changer.” She added, “We are now carefully considering the next steps, looking at how we can further leverage this AI technology to support our colleagues and enhance the quality of care we provide.”
Looking Ahead
With its successful trial, Magic Notes has proven to be an effective tool in improving both the productivity and well-being of social workers. Swindon Borough Council is now evaluating how to implement the software more widely and explore additional ways to support social workers in their roles. The council believes that AI technology like Magic Notes can help revolutionise social care, ensuring that workers are empowered and better able to focus on delivering high-quality, person-centred care.
