The Workers Union has endorsed Her Majesty the Queen’s message to the UK and the Commonwealth. In a speech that aired last Sunday night, the monarch encouraged us to ‘join with other nations across the globe in a common endeavour, using the great advances of science and our instinctive compassion to heal.’
Queen Elizabeth II also paid tribute to the many front line NHS workers who are continuing to care for patients despite the risks of developing COVID-19.
She said: ‘I want to thank everyone on the NHS frontline as well as care workers and those carrying out essential roles.
‘Those that selflessly carry out their day to day duties outside the home in support of us all.
‘I am sure the nation will join me in assuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.
‘I also want to thank those of you that are staying at home, thereby helping protect the vulnerable and sparing many families the pain already felt by those who have lost loved ones.’
The Queen’s message was delivered against a background of political turmoil which saw the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson admitted to hospital with COVID-19 symptoms.

‘This is one of the most challenging times that our country has been faced with since the Second World War. With the country in lockdown, the PM in hospital and a deadly pathogen on the rampage, many people could be forgiven for wondering whether we are seeing the end of days. The intervention of Her Majesty the Queen was a welcome reminder that the real strength of our nation lies is in our capacity to act together for the common good. By commending the selfless efforts of workers up and down the country, the Queen reminded us of the true measure of our humanity. We salute her speech as capturing the best of the British spirit and urge the country to come together to defeat Coronavirus.’
