Automotive Industry Faces Disruption as Ford Staff Demand Fair Compensation

Date: November 12, 2024

In a significant escalation of industrial action within the automotive sector, administrative staff at Ford UK have commenced a week of targeted strikes at various locations across the country. This move comes after months of unresolved disputes regarding pay and contract terms, as detailed in previous reports.

Starting at 7am today, workers at Ford’s Dagenham engine plant have taken to the picket lines, expected to continue their protest throughout the week. Meanwhile, employees at the Ford Speke facility will join the strike from Wednesday to Friday, starting at 6am each day. This action follows a previous 24-hour strike held on October 30th, involving staff from Dunton, Stratford, Dagenham, Daventry, and Halewood, but not at Boreham Motorworks.

At the heart of the conflict is Ford’s recent proposal to offer a one-time payment for 2024 for many office workers, instead of implementing permanent salary increases. Additionally, the introduction of a 100% performance-related pay system from next year has been met with resistance. The workers are also contesting Ford’s plans to alter the long-standing sick pay policy, despite the company’s argument that absence rates remain below 2%.

Ford’s Stance:

Ford has defended its proposal, emphasizing the competitiveness of its salary packages. A spokesperson for Ford stated, “Considering the overall competitiveness of our general salary roll employee pay and benefits package, and the series of strong annual increases amounting to 20 percent over the past two years, the company’s final offer of a 5 percent total pay increase for 2023/24 is fair and balanced. We will continue to engage with our valued UK workers and endeavour to resolve the matter.” This statement highlights Ford’s perspective that their offers are not just competitive but also surpass inflation rates, providing workers with substantial salary growth and benefits including pensions.

Managerial Discontent:

In a parallel development, Ford managers are also expressing dissatisfaction, engaging in actions short of a full strike over the introduction of a proposed performance-related merit award, which lacks guaranteed payments, further illustrating the breadth of discontent within various levels of Ford’s UK workforce.

Impact on the Industry:

This industrial unrest at Ford UK signals potential disruptions not only within Ford but across the broader automotive sector. The strikes could affect production schedules, delivery of parts, and ultimately impact the supply chain, putting pressure on Ford to revisit its compensation strategies.

The Workers Union Says…

“As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on Ford UK to see how it navigates these labour disputes. The strikes represent more than just a fight for better pay; they are a reflection of the broader challenges facing the automotive industry in balancing profitability with fair labour practices. The outcome of these negotiations could set a precedent for how similar issues are handled across the sector in the future.”
