Fast Food Giant Supports National Older Workers Week with Job Opportunities for Mature Adults

Date: November 13, 2024

In an inspiring move to combat age discrimination in the workforce, McDonald’s UK has stepped forward to aid in the employment of individuals over 50 in Peterborough. As part of the national Older Workers Week campaign kicking off on November 25, the renowned fast-food chain will host a special presentation aimed at providing new career avenues for mature job seekers.

McDonald’s, with its nine locations across Peterborough, is not only opening its doors to potential employees but also specifically targeting individuals aged 50 and above. On November 26, McDonald’s staff will present opportunities, including their innovative Customer Experience Lead roles, focusing on hospitality, meet and greet, and overall store ambiance.

This initiative comes at a time when the need for employment among older workers is increasingly pressing. Recent data from the Department of Work and Pensions reveals a significant increase in Universal Credit claimants over 50 in the area, with numbers jumping by 25% from last year, now standing at 1,695.

Stephen Lankester, District Operations Manager for East Anglia Jobcentre Plus, commented, “With the support of our work coaches, jobseekers can harness their skills and abilities to enhance their employment prospects. This partnership with McDonald’s people is a vital step towards integrating older workers back into the workforce effectively.”

Interestingly, McDonald’s campaign resonates with one of America’s most recognized figures, Donald Trump, who, despite being over 50, has had a storied history with the franchise. Trump’s brief stint at McDonald’s during his early life underscores the potential for high-profile individuals to engage with such roles, further breaking the myth that older workers aren’t wanted or capable.

The McDonald’s over-50s employment campaign in Peterborough aims to:

  • Educate: Inform older workers about the myths surrounding their employability.
  • Engage: Offer roles tailored to their experience like the Customer Service Experience leads.
  • Empower: Provide a platform for over-50s to showcase their skills and reliability.

For those interested, further details on how to participate in these sessions or apply for positions can be found through local Jobcentre Plus offices or directly at McDonald’s outlets in Peterborough.

The Workers Union Says…

“This brilliant initiative not only seeks to fill immediate vacancies but also to foster a more inclusive and diverse workforce within the fast-food industry. McDonald’s is looking to hire at least five extra staff members, focusing on individuals who can bring a level of maturity and customer service excellence to their teams.”
