In a groundbreaking move, the UK government has announced a new project aimed at enhancing the way artificial intelligence (AI) assists teachers in marking work and planning lessons. The initiative, supported by a £4 million government investment, seeks to streamline classroom operations, reduce administrative burdens, and improve educational outcomes across the country.
Empowering Educators Through AI
The project will pool a vast array of government documents, including curriculum guidance, lesson plans, and anonymized pupil assessments, into a comprehensive content store. This repository will then be utilized by AI companies to develop advanced tools capable of generating accurate, high-quality educational content. These tools will be designed to create tailored lesson plans, workbooks, and other teaching materials that teachers can confidently use in their classrooms.
The initiative is particularly targeted at technology companies specializing in educational tools. By providing access to a wealth of relevant data, these companies can build AI-driven solutions that will assist teachers in grading assignments, developing engaging teaching materials, and handling routine administrative tasks.
Meeting the Needs of Teachers and Parents
This innovative project comes on the heels of new research indicating that parents are increasingly supportive of teachers using generative AI. They believe that AI can free up more time for teachers to engage directly with students in the classroom, thereby enhancing face-to-face teaching and supporting the government’s mission to remove barriers to educational opportunities.
However, both educators and AI developers have emphasized the need for better data to ensure that AI tools are effective. This project addresses these concerns by providing the necessary data infrastructure to develop AI solutions that are both accurate and reliable.

Science Secretary Peter Kyle underscored the government’s commitment to supporting teachers through technological advancements. “We know teachers work tirelessly to put children’s education first and go above and beyond for their students. By making AI work for them, this project aims to ease admin burdens and help them deliver creative and inspiring lessons every day, while reducing time pressures they face,” said Kyle. He also highlighted that this initiative is the first of many aimed at transforming the use of public sector data to improve public services.
A First-of-Its-Kind Approach
The content store, backed by £3 million of the total investment, represents a pioneering approach to processing government data for AI. This initiative positions the UK at the forefront of using technology to revolutionize public services and improve the lives of citizens. The project also includes a partnership with The Open University, which will share learning resources as part of the initiative.
According to recent tests by the Department for Education, providing generative AI models with targeted data can significantly increase accuracy—from 67% to 92%.
The content store will further empower educators by offering easy access to high-quality, evidence-based educational materials. This initiative demonstrates the responsible and ethical implementation of AI in education, ensuring that teachers are equipped with the tools they need to create dynamic and personalized learning experiences for their students.

As the project moves forward, AI companies are being encouraged to contribute their best ideas for utilizing the content store. A share of an additional £1 million will be awarded to developers who create AI tools that effectively reduce teacher workload, particularly in the areas of feedback and marking, by March 2025.
