Retail workers across the UK are facing an increasingly hostile work environment, with nearly half expressing a desire to leave the industry due to rising levels of violence and abuse. A recent survey conducted by the charity Retail Trust reveals alarming statistics that highlight the pressing need for employers to take immediate action.

The survey, which involved 1,200 retail workers, found that 47% of staff are concerned for their safety at work, citing a significant increase in incidents and called for greater protections for all retail workers amidst rising violence. These incidents range from verbal threats to physical abuse, creating a climate of fear among workers who are simply trying to perform their jobs.

Moreover, 48% of those surveyed reported feeling unsupported by their employers in dealing with the escalating situation. This lack of adequate support is pushing many to consider leaving their roles or even the retail industry altogether. The data also highlights a worrying trend, with 55% of workers stating that the situation has worsened over the past two years, coinciding with broader social and economic challenges. What’s needed here is protection for workers and creative thinking in retail  by employers in general.

Chris Brook-Carter, CEO of Retail Trust, described the situation as “horrifying and heartbreaking,” sharing anecdotes from workers who have been spat on, verbally abused, and had products smashed in front of them. These personal stories underscore the severity of the problem and the urgent need for change.

The Workers Union has consistently highlighted this issue, calling for increased protections and support for shop and retail workers. Our organization firmly believes that no one should have to face violence or abuse as part of their job. The retail sector plays a vital role in the UK’s economy, and the safety and wellbeing of its workers must be a top priority.

The Workers Union says…

“We urge retailers to address these concerns by implementing robust safety measures, offering better support services, and ensuring that employees feel protected. Employers must step up and take responsibility for creating a safe and secure working environment. Without immediate action, the industry risks losing a significant portion of its workforce.”
