Amazon Explores Augmented Reality with Smart Glasses for Delivery Efficiency.

In an innovative push to enhance delivery speed, tech giant Amazon is reportedly developing smart glasses for its delivery drivers, aiming to streamline what’s known as the ‘last 100 yards’ of the delivery process. These glasses, code-named “Amelia,” could potentially revolutionize how packages are delivered by providing augmented reality (AR) guidance to navigate complex environments.

What Are Smart Glasses for Delivery Drivers?

According to Reuters, citing five anonymous sources familiar with the project, these Amazon smart glasses are designed to offer turn-by-turn navigation via a small embedded screen. This feature would guide drivers not only through streets but also inside buildings, past obstacles like gates or aggressive pets, directly to the doorstep. This move is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to cut down on delivery driver costs and enhance operational efficiency.

Despite the promise, the project faces several hurdles:

  • Battery Life: Ensuring the glasses can last through an entire shift without being cumbersome.
  • Data Collection: Mapping out detailed navigation data for every delivery point, which might take years.
  • Driver Comfort: Convincing drivers to wear potentially uncomfortable or distracting devices.

Amazon has a history of pushing boundaries in logistics, from in-house airlines to advanced sorting centres, but integrating wearable tech like AR glasses involves navigating through complex technological and human factors.

Amazon’s Statement:

An Amazon spokesperson commented, “We are continuously innovating to create an even safer and better delivery experience for drivers. We otherwise don’t comment on our product roadmap.” This indicates the company’s commitment to innovation but leaves much to speculation regarding the future of these smart glasses.

As Amazon ventures into augmented reality for its delivery drivers, the balance between technological advancement and employee welfare remains critical. The success of this initiative will largely depend on how well Amazon addresses these challenges, ensuring that efficiency gains do not come at the expense of driver comfort or privacy.

The Workers Union Says:

“The potential implementation of such technology has not gone without scrutiny. “The Workers Union says that while innovation in delivery logistics can be beneficial, the well-being and privacy of workers must not be compromised. If these glasses are to become mandatory, there should be thorough discussions regarding comfort, privacy, and practicality for all drivers, especially those requiring corrective lenses. We advocate for optional adoption rather than contractual mandates, ensuring that technology aids rather than hinders the workforce.”
