A career in bus driving is proving to be an increasingly attractive option in the UK, as calls grow for more younger and female drivers to enter the industry. With salaries on the rise and opportunities expanding, now is the perfect time for individuals seeking stability and growth in a vital public service sector.

The demand for professional bus and coach drivers has intensified in recent years due to workforce shortages. Industry leaders highlight the need to encourage more young people and women to take up the profession, ensuring the future of public transportation remains strong.

Celebrating excellence in bus driving

In recognition of the dedication and professionalism within the sector, Darren Keenan, a driver for FLIXBUS, has been awarded a prestigious accolade for his outstanding service. The 55-year-old received the ‘Highly Commended’ award for 2024, a testament to his exemplary commitment to bus passenger service.

Despite only joining FLIXBUS in November, Mr. Keenan has already gained an exceptional reputation, with customers praising his driving skills and professionalism. He has been working as a long-distance coach driver for four years, following a career in the armed forces in both Canada and the UK. His experience also includes driving for the prison service.

Mr. Keenan, who resides near Ashcroft Mini Travel in Warrington, is also an active volunteer for veterans’ charities, including Help for Heroes. Upon receiving the award, he expressed his gratitude, saying:

“Well, this is a real honour. I had been wanting to drive for FLIXBUS for a while, and when I saw a job advertised with Ashcroft, I seized the opportunity. You need the right mindset to drive long distances, but I am delighted to have made the move to coaches. It is very different from being in the armed forces and prison services, but I really enjoy it.”

Passengers have praised Mr. Keenan’s exceptional service, with one customer describing him as “the best public transport driver I have had in many years.”

A career path open to all

Jessica Strangward, senior operations manager at FLIXBUS, emphasized the importance of attracting more people to the profession. She stated:

“Darren is a fantastic example for those considering a second career in coach driving – whatever your background. We’re sure his story will inspire others to take the leap. We are delighted he felt such a strong draw to drive for the FLIXBUS brand, and he is a fantastic representative for us on the road, with fantastic ratings from our passengers.”

Chris Ashcroft, director of Ashcroft Mini Travel, echoed these sentiments:

“Darren is a fantastic driver and wonderful with passengers, but he is really humble, so we’re pleased to see his great work highlighted by FLIXBUS.”

Why more drivers are needed

The UK transport sector faces a pressing need for skilled bus and coach drivers, particularly as many existing drivers approach retirement. To ensure the longevity of the industry, companies are actively seeking to recruit younger bus drivers while also improving gender diversity in the workforce.

Efforts are being made to improve training accessibility and working conditions, with many operators offering structured pathways to obtaining the necessary licences and qualifications. Salaries have also become more competitive, making bus driving an appealing career choice.

As the demand for public transport continues to grow, now is the perfect time for individuals from all walks of life to consider joining the profession. With success stories like Darren Keenan’s leading the way, the future of the UK’s bus and coach industry looks bright.
